Like any online company out there, shipping costs are a continuous issue. The reality is this: customers seriously dislike paying shipping. In fact, shipping is one major (if not #1) reason for shopping car abandonment, and it is our number one complaint from customers. People just don’t like paying shipping no matter how cheap the product is.
First, we tried to reduce all standard shipping rates by 50%. To our dismay, people continued to complain and cart abandonment only improved about 1 to 2%. Some readers might conclude that 2% is awesome, but it wasn’t enough for us to justify absorbing the extra costs. An improvement of 10% or more would have been a significant sign that shipping was inhibiting buyers.
One thing we did know is that cart abandonment did reduce by almost 2%, and we believed that was still worth exploring. How could we offer cheap shipping for prints and still make money? Prints get heavy and shipping gets pricey. Another notable obstacle we discovered was that many customers are simply unaware of how expensive shipping costs can be.
Many online companies offer free shipping once a specific amount is met. This strategy leads to people buying more to avoid shipping fees. They save money. We make more money. We are finding that people who order small runs of prints (small orders) understand that free shipping would wipe our profit. The key for us was finding the magic number that made sense for us and would attract more orders. That number was $150, but that differs for every business.
Our number one priority is customer happiness. If customers feel like they paid too much in shipping, they can’t possibly be 100% satisfied. This is why we are hoping that free shipping will create more smiles and bring in more customers.
Our large poster printing, or giant poster printing, is amazing. We carefully selected three media/paper types that probably covers about 90% of all large format printing.
Our glossy and matte photo papers cover everything from large scale photograph printing to movie posters, and our banner vinyl is outstanding for just about any indoor or outdoor event including events, expos, reunions, exhibitions and more.
We’re currently looking into an adhesive vinyl which is a peel and stick material that can be installed on almost any surface in any weather condition. It can also be removed and reused many times over since the adhesive never weakens. This new media will make an excellent addition to our giant poster printing services.
Our product development staff (that’s me!) is always adding more stuff to the print mix for our fellow keggars (that’s you!). Here are some things we’ve recently added and others in the works.
New postcard sizes. We now offer every standard size for mailing purposes. The newest postcard size we’ve added is 4.25″ X 5.5″.
Customized Large Poster Sizes. On our large posters page, we offer many sizes but if your size need isn’t available please contact us! We might be able to make it happen.
More shirts styles. Before adding more shirt styles, we make sure we can offer the lowest prices out there. New styles include women tees, kid baseball jerseys, men tank tops and toddler t-shirts. We will be adding about 4 more styles in the next couple weeks which include long sleeves t-shirts and toddler ringers.
Stickers - The PrintKEG team is working on solutions for coated and uncoated sticker options. We are currently investigating initial sizes to offer.
Magnets - Magnets could be a pretty cool addition to our product line, and we are troubleshooting our way into streamlining this product into our workflow. Update: we stopped printing magnets in 2012.
Koozies - We’re hoping to add koozies very soon. We are in quality testing mode at the moment, but its looking pretty good and Mr. Keg is excited! We discontinued Koozies in late 2011.
QR Code Treasure Hunt - Find prizes, discounts and learn more about PrintKEG with Mr. Keg’s treasure hunt where “QR code marks the spot!™” Check it out.
100% Recycled Card Stock - Right now PrintKEG offers 100% recycled paper for flyers, newsletters and brochures, but we’ve been wanting to add a 100% recycled card option for postcards, rack cards and business cards. We’re surprised at how little people choose recycled paper, but that’s not deterring us from doing our part in environmental responsibility. Update: We discontinued offering 100% recycled paper options since it was not selling well and most of our default paper is already partially recycled.
Those are some of the big moves we’re working on, but it doesn’t stop there. We’re always searching for ways to improve ourselves and offer the cheapest printing on the web!
A couple weeks ago, we added many new colors to our t-shirt printing service. Here are a couple designs printed on black, kiwi green and sport gray t-shirts.
The above photo was take when we utilized transfers for t-shirt printing. We no longer use that process and have switched to direct-to-garment printing (also known as DTG printing), which is a far superior technology when it comes to full color printing on apparel. We have also added a variety of shirt styles, an online designer, more sizes and awesome features available only from PrintkegShirts.com.
Color t-shirts with full color printing start at $13.99 and reach as low as $8-$9 each.
Its about time! T-shirt printing is back and we’re pumped. Right now we only offer white shirts, but we hope to launch colored shirts again in a few months. We are keeping a close eye on some DTG printers so keep checking back. Our shirt printing is full color, 1 or 2 sided and your image can be up to 8″ X 10″ in size. Take a look.
Update: When we first began t-shirt printing, we used professional transfers rather than DTG (direct-to-garment) printing like we do now. Transfers certainly have their place in the apparel printing business, especially in the sports world, but transfers just were not working out with the type of service we wanted to offer.
In 2013, we began offering a much better t-shirt printing service by investing in a new DTG machine along with other equipment which allows us to print small runs of incredible full color gear. Our new website, PrintkegShirts.com, offers a huge variety of shirt styles for kids, men and women that can be customized using our sophisticated online t-shirt designer.
We just printed a large poster for a film called Mayor Cupcake starring Lea Thompson (I just loved her in Back To The Future!) and Judd Nelson. We couldn’t find a trailer for the movie, but there is more information at IMDb. We wish the best to everyone involved in making the movie!
Printing movie and film posters has really become a huge part of our printing business. As you can see from the photo, the color richness and quality of this particular movie poster looks fantastic. Big posters like this one are printed on photo gloss 235gsm paper stock optimized for photographic and high resolution prints.
Update (12/03/2012): We recently lowered our shipping rates by an astounding 50%. Now we boast some of the cheapest shipping prices among online print companies.
At PrintKEG, we strive for 100% customer happiness. We receive very few complaints, but one consistent comment we see concerns shipping costs.
Our production and shipping team ensures that every order is delivered in strong boxes and plenty of packaging so covering those costs is very important to us. Since our print prices are so cheap, we can’t soak the shipping costs like other print companies may be able to do. It was long overdue for us to compare shipping prices against a few other online printing companies. The results I personally found were in PrintKEG’s favor.
Battle 1 - Send Posters To East Coast
What would it cost to print 250 11 x 17 posters on gloss text paper and ship by GROUND from us and three other companies to the east coast?
|Save $92 - $126 by choosing PrintKEG|
In the end, PrintKEG’s print and total prices are incredibly cheaper. Our shipping prices are cheaper than PsPrint and NextDayflyers, but the other PrintingForLess slightly beat us. I feel this means our shipping costs are extremely reasonable.
Battle 2 - Send Posters To West Coast
What would it cost to print 250 11 x 17 posters on gloss text paper and ship by GROUND from us and three other companies to the west coast?
|Save $80 - $117 by choosing PrintKEG|
Considering we are located in the east, our shipping costs are inline with competitors (and most of them are located in the west), but we are looking to lower prices anyways. The good news is that our TOTAL prices are still much cheaper.
There are a few areas where we are trying to lower shipping costs without lowering our shipping standards, but for the most part our shipping prices seem reasonable. We will be posting new tests on large posters and stationery in the future.
Also, we guarantee your prints. If your prints are damaged, we replace them. All we normally ask for is a picture since it helps us figure out how we can improve. Read more about our shipping policies.
We just released more holiday card designs. Enjoy!
Our art department recently designed a few PrintKEG shirts for the gang so we thought it a great opportunity to show off our colored shirt printing. The graphics look unbelievable! The color shirts we offer are high quality cotton and the full color printing is very bright and full. You can’t get a better deal on short run shirt printing anywhere else! On your next shirt printing project, try PrintKEG’s cheap shirt printing.
10/30/2013 - We now print on a variety of colored shirts on our new website, PrintkegShirts.com. This new exciting website offers numerous color shirt styles, many sizes for both genders, a sophisticated online t-shirt designer that allows customer to upload files from Facebook or Instagram.
