Canvas Prints for Artists, Photographers, and Interior Spaces

Canvas is one of the most enduring and versatile print surfaces available. Unlike paper prints, canvas carries a tactile, textured quality that reads immediately as fine art rather than a reproduction. The surface absorbs ink differently than coated paper, producing rich, dimensional color with a warmth that flat stock simply can't replicate. That quality is exactly why canvas has remained the dominant medium for gallery art, wall décor, and photographic wall prints for decades.

Artists use canvas prints to sell gallery-quality reproductions of original paintings and illustrations without parting with the original. Photographers use them to transform digital images into wall art that clients actually hang rather than file away. Interior decorators and design-conscious buyers use them to fill wall space with something that looks deliberately chosen rather than mass-produced. And businesses use large-format canvas to create branded displays, lobby art, and event backdrops that make a lasting impression.

For Artists & Illustrators

Canvas is the natural choice when selling reproductions of original paintings, mixed media work, or detailed illustrations. A canvas print carries an implied value that paper prints don't — buyers recognize it as something meant to be displayed prominently, not tucked in a portfolio. Stretched canvas prints are especially effective at conventions, gallery shows, and online shops because they arrive ready to hang, removing any friction between purchase and display. Artists also use rolled canvas sheets to fulfill custom orders where buyers want to frame or stretch the print themselves.

For Photographers

Photography printed on canvas transforms a digital file into a wall art product that feels completely different from a standard photo print. Portrait photographers use canvas for client wall art packages. Wedding photographers include canvas prints in premium album collections. Landscape and nature photographers sell canvas prints as standalone gallery pieces. The texture of the canvas surface adds a painterly dimension to photographic work that clients consistently respond to — and the archival ink set means the print holds up over decades of display without fading.

For Home Décor & Interior Design

Canvas prints are one of the most requested formats in residential and commercial interior spaces — hotel lobbies, office reception areas, restaurants, healthcare waiting rooms, and private homes all use canvas wall art to define a space without the cost of original artwork. The ability to order any standard size in a ready-to-hang stretched format means design-conscious buyers can fill a specific wall dimension with confidence. Canvas also pairs well with virtually any framing style or can be displayed unframed as a clean, modern gallery wrap.

Two Canvas Finishing Options

Every canvas print at Printkeg is produced using wide-format inkjet technology — the same giclée method used in fine art printing worldwide — with a 12-color pigment ink set that reaches a broad spectrum of color combinations and produces sharp detail across the full tonal range. The difference between our two finishing options comes down to how you want the final piece delivered and how your buyer intends to display it.

Canvas Sheets (Rolled)

Unframed | Frame or stretch yourself | Custom sizes available

Canvas sheets are individually printed, cut to size, and shipped rolled. This option gives buyers the flexibility to frame the canvas in any molding style they choose, or stretch it themselves onto bars of their preferred depth. For artists and photographers fulfilling orders for clients with specific framing preferences, sheets are the right choice — you're delivering the print, and the buyer handles the finishing. Canvas sheets are also available in custom sizes in quarter-inch intervals, making them the more flexible option for non-standard dimensions.

Best for: Artists fulfilling custom orders, photographers whose clients have their own framers, buyers who prefer to stretch or frame canvas themselves, and non-standard size requests.

Stretched (Wrapped) Canvas

Ready to hang | Wrapped on Fredrix bars | Artwork wraps the sides

Stretched canvas prints are wrapped around Fredrix wooden bars by our production team and arrive completely ready to hang. The artwork wraps around the sides of the frame, creating a clean, gallery-wrap presentation with no framing required. This is the most popular canvas format for artists selling finished pieces, photographers offering wall art packages, and anyone who wants to deliver a complete product rather than a flat print. The .75" bar depth works well for most home and office display contexts and keeps the presentation clean and contemporary.

Best for: Artists and photographers selling ready-to-hang wall art, gallery-quality reproductions, interior décor applications, and any situation where the buyer expects a finished, displayable piece.

Art File Specifications for Canvas Printing

Canvas and paper prints share some file requirements but differ on one important point: bleed. Getting these three basics right before you submit will ensure your finished canvas arrives exactly as you intended.

Resolution

Submit files at 300 DPI at your finished canvas dimensions. This applies to both canvas sheets and stretched canvas. At 300 DPI, photographic detail and fine illustration work will hold up cleanly at any size in the collection. For very large formats — 24×36" and above — files at 150–200 DPI will often still produce excellent results on canvas because the textured surface is more forgiving to resolution than a smooth coated paper, but 300 DPI remains the standard to aim for. If you're unsure about your file's resolution, submit it and our team will flag any concerns before printing begins.

Color Mode

We accept both RGB and CMYK files for canvas printing. All files are converted to CMYK before production begins, regardless of how they're submitted. For the most accurate color match, design in CMYK from the start — especially for work with rich blacks, deep blues, or subtle tonal gradations where the RGB-to-CMYK conversion can shift color in unexpected ways. If you're working in an RGB color space, be aware that some highly saturated RGB colors (particularly bright greens and electric blues) fall outside the CMYK gamut and will shift slightly in the conversion. Our design team makes adjustments to help ensure prints appear as intended.

Bleed Requirements

Bleed requirements differ between canvas sheets and stretched canvas. Canvas sheets require no added bleed — submit your file at the finished print dimensions, and we'll cut to size. Stretched canvas requires 2" of bleed on each side to account for the wrap around the wooden bars. A 16×20" stretched canvas requires a 20×24" image file. All essential content — faces, focal points, text, key design elements — must fit within the original 16×20" area. Keep critical content at least 0.5" inside the finished edge to avoid anything important getting too close to the wrap point.

Canvas Media and Print Quality

The quality of a canvas print depends as much on the media as it does on the printing process. We selected a canvas engineered specifically for museum-quality archival fine art reproduction — not a general-purpose inkjet canvas, but a purpose-built fine art surface.

Cotton-Polyester Blend

Our canvas features a cotton-polyester blend with a double-weave construction that mimics the texture of traditional artist canvas. The material is dimensionally stable — it holds its shape on stretched bars without warping, sagging, or curling over time. The cotton content gives the surface a natural, warm texture that photographic and painted work responds to beautifully, while the polyester content adds structural durability that keeps the print looking its best through years of display.

Result: A surface that reads as fine art rather than a reproduction, with the tactile quality buyers notice and remember.

12-Color Pigment Ink Set

Canvas printing uses a wide-format 12-color pigment ink set — the same technology that defines the giclée standard in fine art reproduction. A 12-color system reaches a much broader color gamut than standard 4-color process printing, enabling smooth gradations, accurate skin tones, subtle shadow detail, and rich, saturated colors across the full spectrum. Pigment inks also have superior fade resistance compared to dye-based inks — archival-quality prints that hold their color integrity over decades, not years.

Result: Prints that match your original artwork's color with a fidelity that sets the giclée method apart from standard printing.

Fredrix Wooden Bar Stretching

Stretched canvas prints are wrapped on Fredrix wooden bars — a name recognized in fine art supply for quality stretcher bar construction. Fredrix bars are kiln-dried, straight, and dimensionally consistent, which means your canvas stretches taut and stays that way. The .75" bar depth is the standard gallery-wrap depth that works in most home and commercial display contexts without requiring a dedicated shadow box or deep-set frame. Our production team wraps each canvas by hand, ensuring the corners are clean and the face of the print is display-ready.

Result: A finished, ready-to-hang product with the craftsmanship behind it that buyers and galleries expect.

Popular Uses for Canvas Prints

Canvas is one of the most widely used print formats across art, photography, interior design, and commercial display. Here's how different customers put it to work.

Art Reproductions & Gallery Sales

Artists who sell reproductions of original paintings, drawings, and mixed media work use canvas because it's the closest print surface to the original. A canvas reproduction of an oil painting carries a visual and tactile credibility that paper prints don't, which justifies higher price points and makes the work more attractive to buyers seeking something that looks and feels like real art. Canvas is the dominant format for gallery-quality reproductions and artist print sales at higher price tiers.

Portrait & Wedding Photography

Portrait photographers and wedding photographers use canvas prints as the centerpiece of high-end wall art packages. A 20×24" stretched canvas portrait displayed prominently in a client's home is also a standing advertisement for the photographer's work — every visitor who asks about it is a potential referral. Wedding photographers include canvas gallery wraps in premium collections as an upgrade from standard album packages, delivering a wall piece that becomes a long-term fixture in the client's home.

Home & Office Wall Décor

Canvas prints are the most popular format for decorating residential and commercial interior spaces with custom imagery. Whether it's a family photo, a landscape, a piece of original art, or a branded graphic, canvas translates any image into something that looks intentionally chosen for the space rather than printed and pinned up. Ready-to-hang stretched canvas removes all the friction between ordering and displaying — it arrives, it goes on the wall, it stays there for years.

Convention & Market Sales

For artists selling at conventions, art markets, and pop-up events, stretched canvas prints occupy a premium product tier that can carry significantly higher price points than paper prints of the same image. A 12×12" or 16×20" wrapped canvas at an artist table signals a different level of product than a standard print — and buyers who are serious about collecting art will often gravitate toward canvas as the most substantial piece at the table. Canvas is also durable enough to travel repeatedly without the handling damage that flat paper prints accumulate.

Commercial Displays & Branded Environments

Businesses use large-format canvas prints for lobby art, retail display, event backdrops, restaurant wall décor, and branded environments where the space needs to communicate something about the brand's quality and aesthetic. Canvas carries an implicit premium that vinyl banners and foam-mounted posters don't — it reads as a considered investment in the space rather than a temporary display. Healthcare facilities, hotels, and professional office spaces in particular use canvas extensively to create warm, gallery-like environments.

Dropshipping & Reseller Fulfillment

Artists and print resellers use Printkeg as a blind-ship fulfillment partner for canvas orders placed through their own storefronts. We ship directly to your customer with no Printkeg branding, invoices, or marketing material inside — white label shipping at no extra charge. This makes it easy to offer canvas prints on your website or Etsy shop without holding inventory or handling fulfillment in-house. Ask about our reseller program for volume pricing on canvas orders.

Short Runs, Custom Sizes, and Dropshipping

Not every canvas order is a large production run. Our canvas collection supports single-piece orders as easily as bulk production, making it the right choice for artists fulfilling one-off gallery commissions, photographers delivering client wall art packages, or small businesses testing a new display before committing to quantity. Order what you need, when you need it — without minimum quantity requirements pushing you toward inventory you don't have a plan for.

Canvas sheets are available in custom dimensions in quarter-inch intervals, which means you can order a 16" × 22.5" sheet or any other non-standard size that fits your project. Stretched canvas is available in the standard sizes listed on our product pages. Most canvas orders ship in 2–3 business days, with rush options available for tighter deadlines.

For resellers and dropshipping artists: every canvas order ships without Printkeg branding. No company name on the box, no marketing inserts, no invoices. Your customer receives their canvas print without any indication of where it was produced. Our reseller program offers additional pricing benefits for artists and print businesses placing regular volume orders — see the reseller page for details.

Canvas Printing FAQ

What is the difference between canvas sheets and stretched canvas?

Canvas sheets are printed and cut to size, then shipped rolled — ready to be framed or stretched by you or your customer. Stretched canvas prints are wrapped around Fredrix wooden bars by our production team and arrive ready to hang. If your buyer has a specific framing preference or wants to stretch the canvas themselves, order sheets. If you want to deliver a finished, ready-to-hang piece, order stretched canvas.

Can I print a photo as a canvas?

Yes. Photos from smartphones work well at smaller sizes like 12×12", and photos from digital cameras will hold up beautifully at large sizes like 24×36". Canvas is actually more forgiving to resolution than smooth paper surfaces — the texture of the material naturally softens minor quality issues that would be more visible on a glossy print. If you're unsure about your photo's quality at a given size, submit it and our team will review it before printing begins.

What bleed do I need for stretched canvas?

Stretched canvas requires 2" of bleed on each side. A 16×20" wrapped canvas requires a 20×24" image file. All essential content must fit within the original 16×20" area, and we recommend keeping anything important at least 0.5" inside the finished edge. Canvas sheets require no added bleed — submit at finished dimensions.

What color mode should I use?

Submit files in CMYK for the most accurate color match. We also accept RGB files — all files are converted to CMYK before production regardless of submission format. If you're working in RGB, be aware that some highly saturated colors (especially bright greens and electric blues) may shift slightly in the conversion. Our team makes adjustments to help ensure prints look as intended, and we'll contact you if we see anything that needs attention before printing begins.

Do you offer custom canvas sizes?

Yes, for canvas sheets. We offer custom sizes in quarter-inch intervals — so you can order a 16" × 22.5" or any other non-standard dimension that fits your project. Stretched canvas is available in the standard sizes listed on the product pages. If you have a dimension in mind that you don't see, contact us before ordering.

Can you ship directly to my customers?

Yes. We offer blind shipping — your order ships directly to your customer with no Printkeg branding, company name, or marketing material inside. There's no extra fee for this service. We can't substitute your address as the return address, but our name doesn't appear on the package. Consider our reseller program for volume pricing if you're regularly dropshipping canvas orders.

Will my canvas look like what I see on my screen?

Our design team makes color adjustments to help ensure prints appear as intended. That said, monitor calibration varies significantly between devices — what looks correct on an uncalibrated screen can differ from the printed result. For color-critical work, we recommend ordering a proof before committing to a full production run. Designing in CMYK on a calibrated monitor gives you the most predictable outcome.

Do you offer black edges on wrapped canvas?

Only if there's a black border on the front of the artwork — all prints are full-bleed and the image wraps around the sides. If you want black edges, include a black border in your file design. We don't add edge color separately from the artwork.

  • Large Prints are Giclée

The inks for our larger format prints (giclée printing) are pigment-based. Giclee media includes photo gloss, photo matte, watercolor, and canvas. Both ink and media are considered archival together and separately.

  • Small & Medium Prints

Most small and medium prints in the "Fine arts" category fuse toner and archival cardstock together (stick to card options using paperweights like 100#, 110#, 16pt, 18pt, etc.). Together, these techniques create a final archival retail print.

  • Tiny Cards & Postcards

Some postcard products use a different vegetable-based ink (usually soy) for ink rather than toner. We combine this ink with cardstock media (usually 100#, 110#, 16pt, 18pt, etc.) for a final archival product that is environmentally friendly.
