How to Set Up Files for Raised Foil
Raised foil requires two separate files so the press knows exactly where to apply the foil:
- Print file: Your full-color artwork for the card.
- Raised foil mask file: A separate file that maps precisely where the foil will land.
The mask file is the part most people get wrong, so here's exactly how to build it:
- The mask must be a vector file, created in software like Adobe Illustrator.
- Use solid 100% black (C0 M0 Y0 K100) to mark every area that should receive foil.
- White areas indicate where no foil is applied.
- Do not use gradients, drop shadows, glows, transparency, or grayscale images—foil is all-or-nothing, so anything between black and white won't translate.
Avoid knockouts. During foil application, slight shifts of up to 1/16" can occur. Designing without knockouts keeps your foil edges clean and prevents misalignment. For the sharpest results, apply foil to bold logos, solid shapes, icons, or thick typography rather than fine hairlines.
