Business Card FAQ for Small Business Owners

Business cards are often the very first impression your small business makes on potential clients, partners, or collaborators. A well-designed card can communicate professionalism, style, and attention to detail — all in a small, portable format. From choosing the right paper and finish to determining the ideal quantity or deciding what information to include, it’s normal to have questions. This FAQ answers the most common concerns small business owners have about creating professional, effective business cards, helping you make choices that reflect your brand and leave a lasting impression.

1. What size should my business card be?

The standard size is 3.5” x 2” (our favorite), but we also offer square or custom sizes for a unique look. Smaller sizes are portable, while larger or custom shapes can make a bigger impact for your brand. Here are a few examples:

  • Vertical designs over standard horizontal designs
  • Square cards, such as 2.5" x 2.5 and 3" x 3"
  • Leaf-shaped business cards
  • Rounded corners on all four sides
  • Thicker cardstocks like 32pt
  • Circular, oval, and foldover cards
  • UK size: 2.125" x 3.375" if you travel internationally
  • Slim 3.5" x 1.5"

The classic 3.5” x 2” business card fits perfectly in wallets, pockets, or display racks while giving you space to showcase your logo, colors, and style. Its familiar size makes it easy to keep, share, and remember — a small canvas that leaves a big impression.

2. What type of paper or finish should I choose?

Choosing the right paper and finish can make a huge difference in how your business card feels and stands out. For small business owners, we offer a wide range of options:

  • Matte: Smooth, professional, and easy to write on — ideal for notes or appointments.
  • Glossy: Vibrant and eye-catching, perfect for colorful logos or photography.
  • Thick Cardstock: Premium weight for a sturdy, high-quality feel that impresses clients. 16pt is a perfect weight — sturdy, professional, and affordable. While we don’t offer thinner 14pt options, Linen and Metallic Pearl papers are the exception, giving you elegant alternatives without compromising quality.
  • Plastic: Durable and water-resistant, perfect for cards that need to last.
  • Magnetic: Sticks to refrigerators, filing cabinets, or other metal surfaces for extra visibility.
  • Recycled / Eco-Friendly: Sustainable options that don’t compromise quality. We love the 18pt Kraft business cards.
  • Textured / Specialty Papers: Linen, cotton, or felt finishes add a tactile, upscale touch.
  • Spot UV: Highlight specific areas like logos or names with a glossy accent on matte cards.
  • Raised Foil: Metallic accents for logos, borders, or text for a luxurious finish.
  • Embossing / Debossing: Raised or recessed designs that give your card a professional, tactile element.
  • Rounded Corners or Custom Shapes: Subtle design tweaks that help your card stand out in a stack.

With so many options, you can match your business cards to your brand’s personality, industry, or intended impact. Whether you want sleek and minimal or bold and memorable, the right combination of paper and finish ensures your card makes a lasting impression.

3. How many cards should I order?

For small businesses, initial runs of 100–250 cards are often sufficient for networking, events, or client meetings. You can reorder as needed — we make reordering easy and affordable.

  • We do have a $20 Business Cards deal if you would like to start with 100 cards
  • Most people start with 250 cards unless they’ve chosen a more premium paper or finish.
  • OOnce you’re completely satisfied with the look and feel of your business card, ordering 1,000 cards will always give you the lowest cost per card.

4. Can I include a logo, QR code, or special design elements?

Yes! Adding a logo, QR code, or other design elements can help your business card stand out and communicate your brand effectively. Here are some options:

  • Logos: Feature your company logo prominently to strengthen brand recognition.
  • QR Codes: Link directly to your website, portfolio, social media, or online store so clients can connect with you digitally.
  • Custom Graphics: Add icons, illustrations, or patterns that reflect your business style or industry.
  • Typography & Fonts: Use fonts that match your brand identity while keeping the text clear and readable.
  • Special Finishes: Combine these elements with spot UV, foil stamping, embossing, or textured papers to create a premium, memorable card.

Including logos, QR codes, and other custom features makes your business card both functional and memorable, helping you leave a lasting impression with clients and contacts.

5. What file formats do you accept for artwork?

We accept:

  • PDF (preferred for print)
  • PNG or JPG (high resolution, 300 dpi)
  • AI / EPS (vector formats)

Be sure to include bleed and trim marks to ensure your design prints exactly as intended. Bleed is extra space around the edges of your artwork that gets trimmed off, preventing unwanted white borders. For example, a 3.5" x 2" business card file should be sized at 3.75" x 2.25" so there’s enough room for trimming. Including the bleed area helps your card look clean, professional, and polished.

6. How long does it take to print and ship?

Standard turnaround is 2–3 business days, with rush options available if you need your cards faster. Shipping depends on the method you select. The upgraded media or finishes, like raised foil and 32pt cardstock, may require 4 to five days.

  • Linen is made with 30% recycled paper

10. What information should I include on my business card?

Your business card should give people all the essential details they need to contact you and remember your brand. Here’s what to consider including:

  • Your Name: Full name or professional name so clients know who they’re contacting.
  • Business Name & Logo: Clearly display your brand for recognition and professionalism.
  • Title or Role: Optional, but helpful if you have a specific position or specialty.
  • Website: Include your website URL so people can learn more about your business online.
  • Contact Information: Include a phone number and email address for direct contact.
  • Social Media: Add relevant handles or QR codes linking to professional profiles or portfolios.
  • Tagline or Short Description: Optional, but a brief line about your business can help clarify what you do.
  • Address: Only include if relevant, like a storefront or studio location.

Keep your card simple and easy to read — avoid overcrowding it with too much text. Focus on the most important details that help potential clients connect with you and remember your brand.

10.2 Creative Additions for Your Business Card

Beyond the basics, there are plenty of ways to make your business card stand out and leave a lasting impression. Consider including:

  • Taglines or Slogans: A short, catchy phrase that communicates your business personality or mission.
  • Social Media Icons: Small icons for Instagram, LinkedIn, or other relevant platforms to showcase your online presence.
  • Unique Shapes or Sizes: Rounded corners, square cards, or die-cut shapes can make your card instantly recognizable.
  • Interactive Elements: Scratch-off codes, perforated coupons, or mini calendars add fun and functionality.
  • Textures and Finishes: Embossing, foil stamping, spot UV, or textured paper can make your card feel premium.
  • Photos or Illustrations: A small image of your product, service, or yourself can make the card personal and memorable.
  • Color Highlights: Use a pop of color on edges, typography, or backgrounds to catch the eye.
  • Mini Portfolio Samples: Tiny thumbnails of your work for designers, artists, photographers, or makers.
