Frequently Asked Questions
What is giclée printing?
Giclée (pronounced "zhee-clay") is a high-resolution inkjet printing method that uses archival pigment inks to reproduce artwork with exceptional color accuracy and longevity. It's the industry standard for fine art reproductions sold through galleries and limited-edition print releases.
How long do watercolor prints last?
Our watercolor paper is rated for over 200 years of archival life when stored or framed properly. Combined with archival pigment inks, the prints are well-suited for collectors and for resale as fine art editions.
Can I print photographs on watercolor paper?
Absolutely. Watercolor paper adds a distinctive natural texture to photography that flat luster or glossy papers can't replicate. It's especially flattering for portraits, landscapes, and any photographic work meant to feel handcrafted.
What's the difference between watercolor paper and other fine art papers?
Watercolor paper has a pronounced rough texture and is more rigid than smooth fine art papers. Smooth fine art papers suit detailed line work and crisp photography; watercolor paper suits artwork that benefits from visible texture and a hand-painted feel.
Is the paper acid-free and archival?
Yes — 100% cotton rag, acid-free, and neutral-toned. Safe for archival framing, long-term storage, and resale as fine art.
Can I order more than five different images at once?
Yes. The upload button accepts up to five files, but for larger mixed-image orders, just send the rest by email or via Dropbox/WeTransfer with your order number as the subject line.
Will you check my files before printing?
Yes. Every file goes through our prepress review for resolution, color mode, bleed, and any issues that might affect print quality. If we spot a problem, we'll reach out before printing.
A Printkeg artist will prepare your artwork for printing and send you a visual in PDF format via email. This usually takes place within a few business hours. The image we will email you showcases trim location.
This $9 option informs our staff to move forward with quick fixes and tackle any small obstacles. Benefits may include reviewing file dimensions, tackling border issues, and reworking challenging "bleed" areas. There is one goal in mind: to ensure perfect Art Prints.
A human artist reviews every single file before printing starts. If we notice any problems, a Printkeg representative will contact you via email with options how to move forward. The most common issue we see is low resolution, and that can usually be overcome.

Watercolor Prints: Turnaround, Custom Sizes, and Shipping
Reasonable Turnaround Times
2-3 business days for watercolor prints. Turnaround time does not begin until the artwork is set up and approved. Digital proofs, incorrectly set up artwork, and miscellaneous art issues can add extra days. This process is more delicate than other products, and accuracy is instrumental to art reproduction.
Sending Us Your Artwork is Easy
You can upload your digital artwork through the form above. For very large files, please email them to art@printkeg.com or send via file-sharing apps such as Dropbox, Google Drive, or other services. Please reference your order number.
Add a PDF Digital Proof
If you want a visual PDF before printing begins, select the $5 digital proof option. Our staff designers typically send it within 6–8 business hours. Digital proofs add one extra day to the turnaround, which begins once you approve the artwork.
We review bleed, resolution, and dimensions for all artwork. If issues arise that cannot be quickly corrected, a staff artist will contact you or email a PDF proof demonstrating concerns. Our goal is to ensure you are delighted with the final prints.
Custom Sizes Are Welcome
Although we offer many predetermined sizes for our giclée watercolor printing, custom sizes are welcome. Pick the smallest possible size your art fits into and provide the requested dimensions in the "Messages / Instructions" area of the form above.
Watercolor Prints are Full Bleed
All large-format prints are considered full bleed or "edge to edge." Please leave about a 1/8" trim area if possible; otherwise, your image is slightly stretched to achieve full bleed. We preserve borders or margins presented in the original artwork whenever possible.
How We Ship Watercolor Prints
Watercolor prints 16x20 and larger are rolled with Kraft paper and inserted into a durable shipping tube. We add bubble wrap and extra protection inside the tube to prevent movement. Smaller giclée watercolor prints are shipped flat.
Other Print Media You May Appreciate
We Host Many Giclée Solutions
Prints on watercolor paper represent the finest quality in art reproduction. Other wide-format archival and giclée options include canvas, photo gloss, and photo matte.
For Smaller Prints and Cards, Try Our Textured Paper
The textured card selection offers the same archival quality for smaller prints and cards as watercolor paper does for larger prints. Sizes range from 3"x5" up to 13"x19".

Custom Print Project Inquiry from Artist Keith
Q: I’m looking to have a print done on watercolor paper at 8x16 with no white border for an odd-size frame. Is there a preferred file preparation method to avoid wasting paper or confusion on the website?
A: We can handle custom sizes like this. Send your file as an 8x16 PDF. Select the closest size on our website (in this case, 11x17) and provide the custom dimensions (8x16) in the instructions area. Our production team will cut your graphic accordingly.

Art Tips and Suggestions to Improve Your Custom Watercolor Prints
Artwork Guidance for Watercolor Printing
If the tips below seem written in Quenya to you, don't let that deter you from printing your art. Our accommodating crew examines all artwork to ensure watercolor prints appear beautiful. If we cannot resolve any issues, one of our experts will contact you.
Printing on watercolor is treated differently than smaller prints. Make the dimensions of your art files the same as the print size you desire. For example, if you order 16" x 20" watercolor prints, you can submit your art 16"x 20" with no bleed area included. The process should run smoothly as long as critical elements are at least one-quarter-inch away from the edges.
When planning your design, exporting files from your camera, or photographing paintings, make sure your final print file is at least 300dpi. 300dpi is the lowest setting considered high-quality in the commercial print industry. Many applications export art as a web-graded 72dpi or low-setting 132dpi. Images may look fabulous on your monitor but not-so-great via print. Adjusting the resolution of a low-quality image does not fix it. Work in high-quality settings from the start.
We prefer PDF or JPG files. However, our team accepts other conventional file types such as PNG, EPS, or TIF. Review the "save" or "export" settings to ensure the file is not compressed before submission.
You can submit files for watercolor prints in RGB or CMYK color mode. Our 12-ink giclée printing method can reach colors beyond CMYK. While we cannot technically match every RGB color (such as fluorescents), this capability provides superior results for reproducing artwork.
You Don't Need a Template
Most customers send art sized to their desired print dimensions. If we run into problems, we will contact you immediately. For extra caution, feel free to send art with ample bleed.
